11 Oct 2010 : Latest News - October Tennis

OUR AGM
We had a good attendance at our AGM and it was quite a constructive meeting as well. Membership Secretary reported an increase of Adult Membership 84 against 78 and on the Junior side 36 against 16 in 2009. Treasurer showed total Income as £14,420 against £2,496 expenditure and the re-surfacing and re-painting of the hard courts cost us £25,015.25.
The following were elected to serve the club for 2010/2011:
Chairman: Angela R
Secretary and Fixtures Secretary: Denis C
Treasurer: Dave E
Membership Sec: Jayne Q
Exec Rep: Simon Q
Juniors Rep: Steve H
Social Sec: Dean S
Meeting thanked the outgoing Steve Le Comber for his contribution as Chairman. Incidentally the main Sports Club AGM is on Tuesday October 19th and we hope you can attend to show our appreciation for the work our three reps Jayne and Simon Qureshi and Margaret Smith have done for Catford Wdrs Club over the past year.

NORTH KENT
 PRESENTATION  DANCE
We have a  Mini bus going to the North Kent dance this Saturday which is at the David Llloyd Club Dartford a delightful venue at 7:30. Lots of surprises in store and if you want to go ring Mark S. For Mini-Bus travel ring Dean S. I understand 120 tickets have been sold to Clubs so expect a bumper night.
We have 2 Cups to collect and are among the Clubs in the running for the Club of the Year award.

MONDAY COACHING
Please support this with a fantastic new coach Alex from 7:00pm to 8:30pm and all for a mere £6.

BADMINTON  MORNINGS
Dave Elkins runs Thursday mornings Badminton from 10:00am with coaching, coffee and a chance to meet new friends.

OUR COURTS
With Winter, muddy boots, falling leaves approaching, its essential that we keep our new courts clean, tidy and welcoming. Any sweeping of leaves etc must be carried out by the soft brushes held in the Gents dressing room. No one, apart from players should be allowed on the courts.

RESULTS AND FIXTURES
Mens One opened their Winter programme last Saturday with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Martin Dene. Like many results of this nature, the game was much closer and naturally all First Division matches feature players of the highest standard. One missed match point at this level can mean success or failure, so no disgrace in losing to this opposition. Our team was Chris, Nathan, Raph and Adam.

WEEK-END FIXTURES
Sue and her Ladies team are, I understand, without 2 regulars as they open their Winter Programme against the powerful Bexley Ladies 2 at 10:00am at home. Sue's team were unbeaten last Winter and in the Summer gone, but are now in a higher Division. Sounds a good game to go along and watch. On Sunday, it's Ladies One and Captain Steph as they travel to David Lloyd Sidcup(2) at 10:30am.

VAL O'BRIEN
Val, our oldest player and oldest Captain at 79 was taken unwell last Sunday whilst playing Social Tennis and is currently in Hospital with a suspected mild heart attack. He is OK from the latest report I have and undergoing a few tests. We will be signing a card for him this Friday, Sat and Sunday to wish him well.

WORKING PARTY – DON’T LET ME DOWN
We are organising a Working Party for Saturday October 16th at 10:00am for the purpose of evening out grass courts 3 and 4. The intention is to hire a machine for this purpose and get rid of the baseline bumps etc, etc while the Autumn re-seeding and growth is still with us. More on this work next week.

PLATE TOURNAMENT
It's  becoming  a major headache to conclude this Plate event. In the Singles could Andy Hellier play Darren OOI this week end or face disqualification – winners then play Andy Robinson and winners of that play Rob in the top half. In the bottom half Angela and James Smith meet.

In the Doubles Eamon and Andy Robinson are in the final where they meet Ruth and Rachel or Rob and Simon – can you play your semi final.

FINALLY
Thank you for voting me Tennis Club Person of the Year and for the beautiful Larry Logan trophy received at the AGM. Really appreciate the honour – thanks.

29 Jun 2010 : Latest News - Wimbledon Week 2 and the Sun is Out!

OPEN DAY

Sundays Open day was the most successful to date at least during my 14 years at the club. It was all down to a small band of people who targeted streets and the cars at Homebase with leaflets and those who then spent a very warm afternoon with the ball machine, short tennis court, etc, etc to ensure all visitors were made welcome. Six adults, one student and 12 children joined and paid their membership and there is a promise of one or two more who turned up minus cheque books and who may come back Wednesday to pay. Well done!

CLUB TOURNAMENT

No surprises in the Mens apart from Sai taking a set off Chris who won in three. Two great Ladies games: Sharon coming from one set down to beat Angela and Claudia doing a similar job on Julia in the midday Saturday sunshine.

Other results: Nathan beat Dean and the Mens singles, barring miracles will see the Top 4: Nathan, Adam, Raphael and Chris in opposition. In the Ladies Singles Claudia is in the final for the first time to play the winner of Kathy and Sharon. The Mens Doubles sees Dean and Sai play Nathan and Adam, Denis and Andy play Steve LC and John A. Steve R and Mark play Dave P and Val and finally Raph and Chris play the Smiths. Incidentally Raph and Chris play their North Kent Semi Final this week at Wendover. COME ON THE BOYS!

In the veterans Andy plays Steve R in the Final. In the Ladies Doubles it’s the two Ja(y)nes versus Janice and Claudia. Kath and Steph play Angela and Julia. In the Mixed, Adam and Julia are already in the semis and the Junior Final has Thomas Allen up against Rachel Le Comber.

Organisers: Are you running a Plate event for Singles and Doubles??????  Just thought I would ask. EDITORS NOTE: YES we are - my learned colleague the RT HON Mr Dean Smith has set them all up and should be on the board or you can click here to get them online!

MATCH RESULTS

AFTERNOON TEA

Thanks go to Brian G for last Sunday's Tea which compensated for the dismal England over paid stars who didn’t appear to have any fight or will to 'up and at them'. This Sunday our Sunday Come Dine With Me tea will be served by Jayne and Simon.

Thanks for all those who do the Tea Rota and Jayne is still hoping, she tells me, the small few who are not keen may still give it a go. Go on .... one Sunday in 52 is all you are asked and Jayne has a few vacant dates.

COACHING ON MONDAYS

I spotted around 12 or more people at this evenings Coaching which runs from 7.00pm to 8.30pm at a cost of  £6.00. Good value? I'll say it i
s!

CHRISTMAS ...... WHAT ALREADY
?

Yes, believe it or not we need to book the Bromley Court now for our Christmas Dinner and Dance on Saturday December 18th which is always a great social, dancing, gossiping and drinking evening. Mark will need your Money: £40.00 by mid July. Do make an effort to attend. It's Christmas Party Time! Wear that little black number and yes I must get highlights again and get rid of the hair round my ears. Why do us old men grow hair round their ears and lose it on their heads? On a serious note, the Bromley Court bash is always a wonderful evening. Try it and see. We usually get 40 plus people

ROUNDERS  EVENING

How lovely to see young families enjoying themselves at the Rounders and BBQ last Friday - if only we had more of these - if only more people supported the Friday evenings. Call in and see whats on offer one Friday.

SECURITY SECURITY
Please do not leave the main entrance door unlocked at any time and challenge anyone on the ground you may consider to be an intruder. All Tennis Members
should have a shoe tag.

Late Jim Kiddell
Jim who was Life President of North Kent Tennis died recently. He served as Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Comps Secretary, Social Organiser and overall gave 60, yes 60 years service as an official of North Kent. Jim was a stickler for rules, open and honest finance details from Clubs and the NKLTA and kept meticulous records of players, appearances and results during his term as Results Secretary. I recall burning the midnight oil more than once during meetings on rules and re writing the North Kent Constitution. All in all a lovely little man who loved the game.

OUR COACHES
Uptown Experience who are our coaches offer coaching to all ages and included in their staff are:
Jane Longstaff who played for Surrey Ladies Veterans and also represented GB. Jane is a CCA DCA Level 1 Coach.
Ben Jones who coached in USA, Australia, Dubai, and Portugal and also represented Essex.

For more info on their prices for Coaching you can ring Jane on 07713 778446 or visit their website: www.uptownexperience.co.uk

OTHER SECTIONS
We have three other Sections at our Club: that's Badminton, Football and Cricket.

Football: They finished their season in mid–table - Great Effort!

Badminton: They play in two local Leagues and their Mixed and Mens teams are expected to win their Divisions which are almost at an end. They can boast of having Kent players in their sides. Speaking of Badminton, Dave E runs Classes every Thursday Morning at 10:00am in the hall. Well worth a visit.

Cricket: Their season is just beginning and they field 3 teams, the first eleven in Kent Divison 3 and their Seconds in Kent Division 4. Not sure what their third team plays in as they use an outside pitch On Sundays. They play friendlies. In their squad they have talented Daniel Bell-Drummond who toured India with the England 18 side.

19 Apr 2010 : Latest News - Sunshine at Catford! - Week 16

Remember we will be making the Wimbledon draw very shortly and your subs will need to be paid to get in the draw.

REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD

MEMBERSHIP AND WIMBLEDON TICKETS
Thanks to the five people who have already paid this year's Subscriptions which are due as from April 1st. Now the good, the very good news. This year we are going to receive a record 12, yes 12 pairs of Wimbledon Tickets. The reason for this increase is that we have done very well in affiliating our members to British Tennis and, as a result, our Wimbledon tickets allocation is a mighty good one for a little club. The draw for the tickets has to be made by the end of April and the winners names submitted to the LTA to ensure that all the recipients are: (a) British Tennis Members and (b) fully paid up Catford Members for 2010. So to get in the draw, we need your membership as soon as you can, and of course we do hold a record of our British Tennis membership. If you are in doubt if you are a British Tennis member, please ring Jayne Q.

Please support our Race Night at the Club on this Friday which starts at 8:00pm . For £3.00 you can have a lot of fun.

For any info on any of the above Coaching, please ring Jane on 07713 778 446 or Gemma on 07876 638 848.

FIRST CUCKOO
Spring is upon us and a few more Cricketers were spotted at the nets last Sunday late afternoon flapping their wings. Also spotted were a few migrating homewards Tennis Ladies in short skirts - another good sign that the Winter is almost over. I will cast my clout when I see Kris, Denis and Val's little white wrinkly knees emerging from beneath their Damart Long Johns. Any day now I hear.

LONDON MARATHON
Simon Q is running this year for the PDSA. If you would like to sponsor him visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/sq. God bless his little cotton socks and legs if he can get around.

07 Mar 2010 : Latest News - Winter Wonderland - Week 9
CLUB SUCCESS
Well would you Adam and Eve it, we have not one, not two but three teams through to the Winter Finals. Hats off to our First Team who have made it to the Winter Mens Division One North Kent final, a marvellous achievement. They now play Gravesham at home on Saturday March 20th at 10:00am where victory would make them the top side in North Kent for the Winter. The Ladies Second Team, that’s Sue and the gang play their Final versus Gravesham on Sunday March 21st at Home at 1:00pm. Finally, Stewart and his Vets Second Team are also in the Final which is due to be played away on Saturday April 10th. Can we bring off three great wins – my local Paddy Power is not so sure. I say we can, and to win Division One would be a major triumph.

RECENT RESULTS
Mens One beat Wendover One 3-1 with Chris, Nathan, Raphael and Adam Chapman.
Mens Vets 2 beat Hartley 2 by 4-0 with Steve Roberts, Clive Birkhamshaw, Stewart and Denis.
Vets One and Ladies Vets had their matches called off due to the rain.

Talking about rain. Two brave old boys played a Singles on our courts last Sunday afternoon which surprisingly were free from water, whereas the overflow car park was under water. Nice to know that our newly re-laid courts are waterproof. They are due to be painted on Monday 17th May and will be out of action for around eight days (Remember to record your vote on the COLOUR!) – hence a lot of away games at this stage. We should have grass court usage as well during this period.

MARCH FIXTURES
This Saturday at 10:30am and one court only, our Ladies Pair play Sydenham in round one of the 2010 North Kent Cup.
Saturday 13th March Our Ladies Vets are at Crescent.
Wednesday 17th March Our Over 70 Team are at home to Margate.
Saturday 20th March Our Mens One play Gravesham in the Winter Final at home at 10:00am while Eamons Vets One are away to Bearsted.
Jayne's Ladies Vets are away to Beckenham.
Sunday 21st March at 1:00pm. Come to cheer Sue and Ladies 2 who entertain Gravesham in their final.

SUMMER SEASON
Yes, the Summer season starts on April 1st but we make an early start beginning with Eamon's Vets One playing Bexley 2 at home on Saturday 27th March at 10:00am, not an easy opener by any means.

SUMMER FIXTURES
If you would like a copy of this Summers Fixtures, just give me a shout and I will e-mail them to you.

LONGEST SERVING PLAYERS
I can now confirm that the current longest serving players at the club are Mark Smith and Angela Rezki. Mark joined in 1981 and starts his 30th season with Catford.

CASINO NIGHT
Thank you Jayne and Simon for a most enjoyable Casino night last Friday. James Bond, Diamond Lil and Pussy Galore could not make it, but those who did, had a lovely evening of fun gambling.

Please get your tickets as soon as possible as the Organiser, Maggie needs definite figures for ordering the food. It promises to be a lively evening, so swing into Spring with a Highland Fling.

NO TAKERS
We had only one taker for a Tennis weekend away so Angela who was organising, has had to cancel .

NOTE TO WINTER CAPTAINS
Please hand in your Winter match subs to Val as soon as possible.

AND FINALLY...
Yes, the news you all do not to get a reminder about but it is Annual Subscription time again and your 2010 subscriptions are due on April 1st.

CRICKET NEWS
Congratulations to Daniel Drummond–Bell son of our Club Chairman Percy who was a member of the Kent Under 17 side who had a great 2009 season winning the National Cup and Championship. Young Daniel made a superb 103 in the Cup final against Durham.

Can we also extend our sympathy to the wife and family of former Catford Cricketer Tony Lesley who passed away recently. Our sympathy goes also to former tennis player Roy Causton on the death of his dear wife Heather who lost her battle with cancer. Roy was our Mens Doubles winner in 1997.

10 Feb 2010 : Latest News - Week 5
TENNIS RESULTS
We were hit by snow once again last week and two games were snowed off on the Saturday. On Sunday however, Ladies 2 and Captain Sue Rice–Vine took Janice, Sharon and Claudia to Chislehurst where they had a 4—0 victory. So now, having played 4 games, won 3 and drawn one they await to see if they are in the Winter Division 3 Final. It may all boil down to their drawn game with Knockholt where sets and games will be a factor.

Simon's Mens 3 finished their Winter Programme with Dean, David Pitman, Ben Brown and Mike Legon going down 0—4 to Hartley – disappointing result, not so much the loss, but the fact they should have run the visitors closer.

Today our Over 60 side saw off Crescent to end their Winter programme, the side being John Clay, Tony Barnes, Denis and Clive Richardson.

FEBRUARY FIXTURES
No matches this weekend so courts available Saturday morning and all day Sunday.

SOCIAL TIME AND IT'S CEILI TIME
On Saturday 13th March Maggie Inness will be running a Ceili to raise funds at the Club at 8:00pm. So what's a Ceili?? It's an evening of Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh Dances with live music and a caller where we hope you will step it out and give it a try. Just swing to the right, men to the left, ladies to the middle and let's hear that fiddle. The cost £10 which includes food and all profits go to the club. So please please support and we want raffle prizes as well. It’s a fun evening and a great way to improve your footwork for the summer ahead.

Who was the Catford Tennis Lady spotted recently at the National Gallery arm in arm with a strange guy who couldn’t tell his Canaletto from his Cornetto?

Who was the Catford Tennis Lady spotted recently playing at the All England Club – Indoors of course?? And didn’t she do well!

Why did the Captain of the Mens Over 60 team try to gag the Press after he was found in bed with two Tennis Rackets, one of which belonged to his partner. Can he still remain as Captain asks Max Clifford? And so say all of us.

Will Steve Roberts and Val O'Brien be nominated for Oscars after their performance recently in Catfords film of 'Trading Places' where Steve was relegated to Mens 3 and Val in his Eddie Murphy role was elevated to Mens Two.

OUR COURTS
Our re-surfaced Courts, complete with new nets and winders are playing very well with an even bounce and they look really smart. The Practise wall is also being used and will be painted shortly. You might have noticed very minor wet/dampness on the courts but this is part of the surface bedding in and will gradually fade away. Here's a note for your Diary: Monday, 17th May. That’s when the courts will be painted with the colours of our choice. The courts will be out of action for 8 days (weather permitting) during and after the painting.

This brings me to our website where you are asked to vote on the two toned colours you would like to see painted.

CAPTAINS
Team Captains, could you please hand in your match fees £8.00 per Winter match after each game to Val behind the Bar. The Club's main Treasurer would like the money to paid in promptly which gives her a better guide to the cash flow. Also Captains, the winder for the hard court nets, should you need it - speak to Denis - it's safely hidden! I do check the nets regularly and with our new nets perfectly installed they should retain perfect height - unless abused, jumped on, etc, etc. So if you see players leaning on the nets, do advise them not to do so. We now have three perfect hard courts, nice flat even surface that we should keep neat, clean and up to standard.

FIXTURES
Very busy weekend ahead with five, yes five teams in action:
Saturday: Home at 10.00am: Eamon Martin's Vets One take on Hayes in their opening Kent match.

Saturday: Away at 1.00 pm: Andy Hellier's Mixed Two are at Sydenham in their final match.

Sunday: Away at 10.30am: Stewart Walker's Vets Two are away at Old Wilsonians.

Sunday: Away at 11.00am: Steph's Ladies One visit Park Langley.

Sunday: Home at 1.00pm: Steve Le Comber's Mens Two play Martin Dene.

We do try and avoid Sunday matches during the Winter time, but unfortunately the bad weather and also our courts being out of action has meant there will be some matches on Sundays at 1.00pm. So if you want Social Tennis, there will be 3 courts from 8.30am onwards and just one court from 1.00pm onwards.

RESULTS
Just one result so far this year where our mid week Vets side of Rob, Denis, Sharon and Janice lost 0-4 to Bexley. Yes, a bad hammering, but Bexley have not been beaten in this competition for some years and fielded a very, very strong side, especially the Ladies pairing. What had Captain Denis to say to his crestfallen side? Eating his large slice of homemade bread pudding he quoted the poet John Dryden who said: "I'm a little wounded, but I am not slain, I will lay me down to bleed a while. Then ill rise and fight again".

CELEBRATION
IN 2011, that’s next year, North Kent Tennis Association will celebrate its 75th birthday when the Presentation Dinner and Dance will be a celebratory formal affair. In 2014 we will celebrate our 100 years as a Tennis Club and even at this early stage any suggestions of how and where we should celebrate are welcome.
KARAOKE NIGHT
Last Friday's sing as we go went down well and Friday evening Social night continues to attract patrons. Thank you Val for preparing the food and thanks to all those who sang or was it strangled the songs last week. Poor old Denis asked for a Pat Boone song, but no one head of him, which upset the old chap. Keep attending on Fridays folks.
